There are downloadable required and ancillary texts and papers to be sucessful in the course.

Kackstaetter, U.R., 2021, Draft

Edition, Manual of Rapid

Mineral Identification - Vol II.

My second volume in the series of rapid mineral identification. It has not been officially published, therefore this is the FREE PDF draft.

Perkins, D., 2020, Mineralogy

Open source mineralogy textbook by Dexter Perkins, University of North Dakota

Raith, M.M., Raase, P. &

Reinhardt, J., 2011, Guide to

Thin Section Microscopy

A fantastic, in depth publication about the practical use and application of the Polarized Light Microscope with thin sections in geology. Available in multiple languages FREE of cost. How to write a Client Report - PDF download Geologic Client Report Example - PDF download Method vs Procedure - PDF download ICP Analytical Results Computation - PDF download

Cell Phone Apps

Modern cell phones have a multitude of sensors. Some of those can be used for geologic analysis. The following apps are recommendations for laboratory investigations in this course.

Physics Toolbox Sensor Suite by

Vieyra Software

Capable of measuring a variety of physical data. Our main interest is the Magnetometer measurements included in the app. Avilable for Android and iPhone.

RadioaktivitätsZähler

This unique German app will turn your camera CCD chip in your cell phone into a sensitive, real working radiation detector with minimal modifications. You will have to block light reaching your camera by using black electricians tape or similar to cover your lense. Avilable for Android and iPhone.

PROFEX: Open source XRD

and Rietveld Refinement

During this lab you will execute simple chemical and physical tests, such as open and closed tube tests, fusibility, and ion paper chromatography on a mineral sample . Bragg’s Equation Excel Calculator XLS file to calculate 2 Theta angles to d-spacings and visa versa from XRD data. MIN-OPT 2000 - Optical Mineral Microscope Simulator PC only, most likely abandonware. (Not to be confused with MinOpt2000 Problem Solver by Princeton University; same name, totally different software) Simulator of the Polarized Light Petrographic microscope that lets you investigate optical properties by orienting crystals of the 6 crystal systems. Also allows for simulating interference figures and plagioclase compositions from extinction angles.
